Staff Picks April05/13

The following is a list of Albums (CD/LP) that I think you ought to check out. They are in no particular order.

01) The Men "New Moon"... available on Compact Disc & Vinyl (Sealed)
A fun garage rock album. I was impressed to find out they went as far as recording the vocals live off the floor.

02) Youth Lagoon "Wonderous Bughouse"... available on Compact Disc & Vinyl (Sealed)
This is Youth Lagoon's second album ("The Year Of Hibernation" being the first). I find this material to be calming/relaxing. Also interesting to find out it's the one guy, Trevor Powers, behind the material,  and he also tends to write about mental illness and the human psyche.

03) Cream "Wheels Of Fire"... available on Vinyl (Used)
I've never gotten into any of Cream's post Cream projects but for whatever reason when Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Jack Bruce are together I find myself really enjoying it. The album also comes with material that's live from The Fillmore. Basically a live album and studio album combined.

04) MC5 "Kick Out The Jams"... available on Compact Disc (Used)

05) Allah Las "Allah Las"... available on Vinyl (Sealed)
Great listen... These guys remind me of a cool band from 1960.

06) Jim James "Regions Of Light & Sound Of God"... available on Compact Disc (Sealed)
From the lead man of My Morning Jacket, Jim James makes a beautiful sounding solo record.

07) Zephyr "Zephyr"... available on Vinyl (Used)
I don't know much about this title. I don't even know if I liked it that much. The album cover image is stuck in my head, an odd looking record. It's progressive blues rock with a mighty high singing female vocalist. Definitely some cool grooves on it.

08) The Raveonettes "Raven In The Grave"... available on Vinyl (Used)
I haven't heard much from this duo, but what I've heard I dig.

09) Lenz "Ways To End a Day"...available on Vinyl (Sealed)
These guys remind me of 1980's reverb pop-rock. They have some catchy tunes but they sneak some interesting melodies and instrumentation. I really got into the drumming on this record (nice tom work).

10) Julie Doiron & The Wooden Stars "S/T"... available on Vinyl (Sealed)
I was excited to see this album for the first time on vinyl. I picked up the disc at one of her shows a couple of summers ago and I played it a lot in my car. Great songs, great band, and of course Julie is great.
